Angels: The Rainbow Bridge
By Rosemary Ellen Guiley

Angels are “the rainbow bridge to higher consciousness.” As the messengers of God, angels link the earthly realm to the heavenly realm. In sacred art, we see this portrayed over and over again with wings painted like rainbows.
In mythologies around the world, the rainbow is an universal symbol of the bridge to the realm of the gods. The rainbow also is the path along which walk the souls of the dead as they cross over into the afterlife, and it is the road walked by deities and enlightened souls to the higher planes of consciousness. Angels, then, provide the human soul with a “rainbow bridge” to God.
Folklore tells us that a pot of gold lies at the end of the rainbow. Spiritually, this is true, for the rainbow bridge of the spiritual path leads us to the treasure of oneness with the Creator.
I see the angel as a being of sacred mystery and power. Through the interconnection of all things in the cosmos, the angel becomes a part of us as well. Our angelic or divine nature is expressed whenever we strive for the highest and best in us.
In the early 1990s I undertook the writing of my first book on angels, Angels of Mercy (published in the United Kingdom as An Angel in Your Pocket). I traveled to England, where I met a remarkable medium and healer, Eddie Burks, whose friendship I enjoyed for many years, until his passing in 2005. Through Eddie’s mediumship, I had a mystical experience of a presence that filled the room we were in with intense heat. I was given a message and a mandate from the angels that has remained with me to this day:
Your interest in the angelic kingdom is purposeful, the full import of which will only be revealed in the course of time. You are being used by the angelic kingdom as a willing and valuable servant to help bring about a greater awareness of the angelic function…
We call upon you to tune into this kingdom not by act of will but by dedication likened to sanctified purpose. Our kingdom is one of great light… You will be given the necessary protection.
As for your work, rest assured that we take sufficient measure according to our purpose. Remember this also: do not reduce us in any way to suit humanity’s understanding. This would not be right. Raise humanity instead to meet us through inspired understanding. Impress on people that we are not as they. We are not human. We are no closer to God than you are. But we serve his purpose in a way that you would judge to be more direct. We express a power that you would not understand as yet, except if you experience it. The word you would choose would be ‘ineffable.’ We differ from you in a number of essential ways. We have no pride. But we have much love. We bear the very essence of unconditional love. Yet, we have the power to direct this and place it where God would have us do so. We seek earnestly to raise the human understanding, to bring it to a sufficient level where the answers to pressing problems can be found. We shall not give the answers–that is not our function.
So, do you see our function more clearly? In your writing, check what you say against what has been given here, and you will do us a great service, and in turn, humanity. Our blessings come to you now, shafted in intense light, which would not be fitting for you to see, but which will lift you and inspire you in the work ahead. We say farewell with the thought that you and we are likewise children of God doing his purpose.
I have never forgotten that message. In our desire to understand angels, to touch the glory that we perceive in them, we cannot reduce them to pals and pets. Instead, we are called to raise ourselves to that glory, which is the very essence of unconditional love.
I look forward to traveling the rainbow bridge with you, exploring the sacred mystery of angels, and our relationship to them. I welcome your comments, questions and experiences, for through sharing we all learn and grow.
