Got Curses? How to Break Them

By Rosemary Ellen Guiley

The object seemed harmless enough. In fact, I was pleased to receive it. A charming and lovely statue of a mythological figure, given to me by a person involved in my research. I had no inkling that along with it came something extra: a curse.

Over the coming months, I suffered a strange run of bad luck. Now, everyone encounters problems and setbacks, but it seemed to me that I was in an unusual slipstream of bad vibes. What was more, things got progressively worse. Finally, the worst hit when I broke my right wrist and could not write, drive or do much of anything. Fortunately, I recovered completely, but not until after considerable downtime and havoc.

At about the time of that personal disaster, I realized that something more than coincidence was afoot. I zeroed in on the statue, which I had placed on a bookcase in my office. Shortly after receiving it, my relationship with the giver had crumbled on a bad note. A magically adept person, the giver had the knowledge and the motive to send me a Trojan horse full of ill wishes.

How could I remedy the situation? The obvious choice was to throw the statue away and do a spiritual cleansing to remove any energetic attachment. However, I knew that the object itself could continue to be a problem unless it was neutralized or destroyed properly.

Most effective would be burning it to ashes – but the statue was made of resin. Other effective solutions would be to bind the curse and bury the statue, contain it by encasing or enclosing it, or throw it in running water. I chose the latter. First I cleansed it with sea salt and prayer, and then I bound it up in white cloth and tossed it into deep running water. Once the statue was out of my environment, the pall lifted.

It might be easy to dismiss the run of bad luck as “just one of those things” rather than see a connection to an object carrying an ill wish or curse. But fact is, human beings have been cursing each other via objects for millennia. Intention can be imbued into objects so that they become charged with a field of energy that affects an environment or individual. Yes, it’s magic – but today scientific research is backing up the “magic” of intentionality.

In the previous issue, my article on curses covered how curses are made, both deliberately and unwittingly, through the projection of intense emotion and intention. So, let’s continue on: Once a curse is thrown, how can it be broken or neutralized?

Not all curses are attached to objects. Some curses are verbal or written. Let’s deal with cursed objects first.

Cleansing and binding objects

An object believed to hold a curse or negative spirit attachment should be neutralized first. Simple but effective means of purification are to bathe the object in sunlight, or douse it in sea salt and then running water. Some people may prefer to use blessed salt and sprinklings of holy water. At the same time, spiritual help should be invoked through prayers and visualization.

For example, the object should be visualized as cleansed and pure, and the energy of the curse cleansed or dissipated with spiritual help, such as angels or guides. Curse energy can be visualized as a black stream or energy that is turned to white or white-gold. The energy can be sent out into the cosmos, or grounded into the earth. Wherever it is sent, it must be with the intention that the negative is at least neutralized, or transformed into positive.

Objects that have been imbued with powerful curses can be magically bound through ritual. The paranormal community has many people who have had the occult, magical or shamanic training to deal properly with such objects.

Neutralized objects can be kept (sometimes they are kept in containers as extra binding agents), but it’s probably best to get rid of them. Options include burning to ashes and burying the ashes or throwing them in running water, or throwing the entire object in deep running water. All of these are ancient and universal remedies against all things malevolent.

Breaking verbal and written curses

If a curse has been verbally thrown against a person or place, it can be neutralized through spiritual practices and ritual. A cleansing of a person’s auric field can be undertaken, using prayer, incense or sacred herbs, sea salt, water/holy water, and visualization. You can build up your own spiritual armor by seeing yourself surrounded in an egg of white or white-gold light that lets in no negativity. It’s also important to call in your own spiritual help.

An environment can be cleansed as well by ritual and prayer. One method: Take a lighted candle and a bundle of sage or a bit of burning incense, and stand in the northernmost corner of a room. North is associated with the doorway to dark or negative forces. Walk the perimeter of the room, going clockwise (the motion of positive), banishing all unwanted and negative energies and presences, and infusing the space with new, positive energy. Invoke spiritual help. When you have walked the perimeter, then walk diagonally across the room, in the form of an X so that all four corners are covered. Seal the ceiling and the floor as you walk. This will help to clear the entire space. Do this in every room.

Sometimes a curse takes the form of bad-mouthing and verbal personal attacks. Here’s one binding spell to counter this type of curse. Take a photo of the offender, or else write the person’s name on a piece of paper. Place the photo or name in a plastic baggie with ice cubes. Place the baggie in a freezer, with the prayer that the attacks are now “frozen” and will stop. Later, when you feel in the clear, take the baggie out and let the ice thaw. Visualize the negative energy melting away with the ice, transformed into healing water.

You may not know if a curse has been written. Writing a spell energizes it and helps to call forces into motion. (The same principle applies to affirmations for things you wish to manifest in your life.) However, you can use prayer and visualization to break up a possible written curse. Visualize the writing being burned by spiritual fire, or transformed in a positive way. Always see the negative energy transformed into positive energy.

If you know who sent a curse, should you send it back to them? Opinions on this differ, but I believe that it is better to neutralize the curse and transform the energy, rather than send it back as a boomerang, and perpetuate the negativity.

Neutralizing poppets

Like written curses, you may not know if a curse has been thrown via a poppet or doll, which serves as a sympathetic substitute for, and link to, the victim. A magically adept person may be able to see clairvoyantly whether this is the case. The energy stream can be broken by some of the remedies described above. If you can somehow obtain the poppet, you can deactivate it as you would an object as described above.

Other sources of help

As I wrote in “Curses! Haunted Again!”, curses can take many forms, from those created by magical act, to ill wishes and bad thoughts that have sufficient energy to lodge in physical space. It’s always a good idea to consult an expert – someone who has the spiritual/magical knowledge to know how best to approach any given situation. There are certain basics that can be performed, but adepts also develop their own unique approaches based on their abilities and training.

The best way to deal with curse negativity is to build up your own spiritual protection to lessen over-all vulnerability. Daily prayer and meditation will strengthen your auric field and build stronger connections to sources of spiritual help. It’s a good idea for anyone engaged in paranormal activity to take daily “spiritual vitamins.”
