ROSEMARY ELLEN GUILEY NEWSLETTER MAY 2010
www.visionaryliving.com
Hi Friends,
I hope spring is opening exciting new things for everyone! This month’s article at the end of news & announcements concerns the influence of the moon and its phases on paranormal activity. Surprise: the full moon may not have the effect you might think!
News and announcements
Throughout May I am spending a great deal of time in one of my favorite haunted cities, Salem, MA, to do research for my book on the ghosts of Salem (Stackpole Books) and to give weekly lectures at the brand-new Omen center, created by Christian Day, the proprietor of the Hex shop in town. Christian, one of Salem’s leading Witches, and I are cooking up some intriguing projects, which we will be able to announce soon. While in town In am spending time with Lori Bruno, the popular Sicilian Witch who gives readings at Hex. Always get one when I am here!
Meanwhile, I am checking out haunted places in Salem such as the Inn on Washington Square, the Salem Inn, the Hawthorne Hotel and more, as well as one of the city’s best haunted places to meet and eat, Rockafellas. Hint: if you stay at the Inn on Washington Square, get the most active room, the Honeymoon Suite, which has one of the best jacuzzis I have experienced. Nothing like a little luxury with your ghosts! Thank you Bobby Marcey and Paul Stream, innkeeper and manager!
If you are in the Salem area, please come to one of my lectures given every Tuesday night this month, at 7:30 PM. The Omen center is located in the mall building. Topics coming up are Good Fairies/Bad Fairies on May 11, Vampires on May 18 and Bad Ghosts and Negative Hauntings on May 25.
Last month I enjoyed a fantastic investigation at the Hill View Manor former nursing home in New Castle, PA. The investigation was broadscast live on the internet by Para-X Vision. We had some great results in real-time EVP with the MiniBox radio sweep device. If you enjoy paranormal investigation, check out the Hill View – it has a lot of activity. It was a wonderful evening, and my thanks go to Dave Jones of Para-X Vision, Marc Tetlow of Ideal Event Management, Candy Braniff and Gary Cangey of Hill View Manor, and my fellow investigators, among them John Zaffis, Bruce Tango, C.C. the Huntress, Craig Rupp, and Tara and Joe Ciampa, editors and publishers of Visions magazine.
I also had a great weekend in Gettysburg, PA at Troy Taylor’s haunted weekend on the battlefield and in town. Good to meet up with friends Troy, Rene Kruse, Kelly and John Weaver, and Craig and Melissa Telesha, all fine investigators. I had the bonus of doing my monthly live radio segment for Scott Colburn on Exploring Unexplained Phenomena while on the battlefield. Scott, come on out – we’ll give you a memorable haunted time!
Upcoming
This month I will be investigating at West Virginia State Penitentiary in Moundsville, and Nemacolin Castle in Browsville, PA, with Rene Kruse and Dale Kaczmarek’s Ghost Research Society.
More presentations: A lecture on demons at Spirit Day in May in Camp Hill, PA on May 15, and a lecture on vampires at DraculaCon II in Windber, PA on May 8. Details are on my calendar page at www.visionaryliving.com/calendar.
Other things keeping me furiously busy: In addition to my book on Salem ghosts, I am at work on my Ouija board book with Rick Fisher and a new project for Llewellyn with Phil Imbrogno, on portals and paranormal activity. See you on down the paranormal road!

Does the Moon Influence Paranormal Activity?

There’s plenty of supernatural folklore about the moon and its effects on people and living things. There’s also good evidence that the moon affects paranormal phenomena, too.
In folklore, a full moon is a time of increased activity of all sorts. The full moon has been
blamed for causing insanity and crazy behavior. It is a time of good luck and bounty, of bursting sap and copious blood. Because vital forces and fluids are at their peak, things should not be cut and surgeries should not be undertaken, according to lore.
The full moon also has a real biological tide effect on fluids in the body, which could affect mental states – and, by extrapolation, a person’s sensitivity to psychic phenomena. Depending on the individual, sensitivity might increase or decrease. Many paranormal investigators feel that the full moon is not good for investigations, however, and say that waning and new moon phases seem to be better. From a folklore perspective, it makes sense. The riot of natural activity stirred up by the moon could interfere with the ability of subtler phenomena to stand out.
The full moon actually produces geophysical effects that may indeed dampen paranormal activity. The earth expands 1/16 of an inch during the full moon’s gravitational pull. The expansion is caused by the movement of magma chambers below the earth’s surface. These movements affect the earth’s magnetic fields. Many paranormal hot spots are in areas of negative magnetic anomalies. Thus, an increase in magnetic fields is likely to have an adverse impact on paranormal activity.
Actually, neither the precise full moon nor new moon may be the best times for the paranormal. Take note of these findings in ufology related to lunar phases, compiled by my research colleague Philip J. Imbrogno, a noted ufologist, science educator and author of several books, among the, The Interdimensional Universe, Files From the Edge and (as co-author ) Night Seige. Phil has compared lunar phases in 3,432 reports of UFO sightings in the Hudson Valley, New York area between 1983 and 1997, where a major UFO wave occurred. He found that the peak of UFO activity occurred 2.5 days after the full moon, with a second and lesser peak 2.5 days after the new moon.
Many paranormal hot spots feature a wide range of activity – not just hauntings, but UFO sightings and mysterious creatures as well. A study of the dates and times of non-UFO paranormal activity probably would show the same lunar phase pattern, Phil says.
Phil and I are presently researching portals, areas of “hot” paranormal activity, and we are compiling lunar phase and other data to help establish patterns in these areas.
